Terrible Mother

Good News

I just found out that my story "Jacob in Relief" was selected by the faculty here as one of two submissions from our school to Best New American Voices, 2008, an anthology that chooses the best new fiction from MFA and writing programs across the country.  Even better?  Friend Two is the other submission.

Yes, Okay. Alright.

So "thatguy" is right, and my last post did make me a liar.  I want to feel all angsty about it, but I can't.  The good news?  The good news is that I passed my exam people.  I passed!  3 out of 5 of the people in my year and genre did not pass--I was one of the two that did (those three get a "do-over," so it's not likely they will fail out of the program.  Friend Two is one of these people, and his answers were excellent, but he got flagged down because of the way he tried to define the traditional canon). 

Regardless, out of the three questions, I earned a "high pass" on two of them.  I'm happy.  I'm relieved. 

So, more later (swear swear pinky-swear, thatguy).  But for now, know that I'm almost officially an MFA graduate.

It's Almost Over

The exam is nearly over--I have until tomorrow at 2pm to turn it in--and I'm nearly done.  I'm just so exhausted and worn out.  One more push guys, and it's down hill from here.  I'll update you all tomorrow on the status of said exam and said life.

Under Siege

Normally, I'd refrain from titling any of my posts after a Steven Segal movie, but these are desperate times, people.  Desperate times.

I just received my exam and I'm officially freaked out.  I am also not allowed to talk about the exam itself with anyone, ANYONE, which I think is semi-ridiculous, but okay. 

So, for the next six days, I don't know how much you'll hear from me.  Just wish me luck, and I swear, if I pass this thing, I'll be posting fantastic nicknames until Jeb retires from politics.

A Phone Call With Friend One On April Fool's Day

Terrible Mother:  The Things and I are playing a great April Fool's joke on The Sweet Boy.

Friend One:  When is April Fool's Day anyway?

Terrible Mother:  Uhh...April 1st.

Friend One:  Oh yeah?  When's that? 

Terrible Mother:  That would be today.

Friend One:  This exam business is killing me.

Terrible Mother:  Sure the exam takes all the blame like an illegitimate step-child, while the rum gets out the back door?  I see how it is.
